1. Weigh your bag before you leave home
A cheap luggage scale costs a fraction of an overweight-bag fee at the airport. Weigh with everything packed, including anything you plan to add last.
2. Check the airline's cabin bag size, not just weight
Low-cost carriers in particular enforce exact dimensions, sometimes with a sizer at the gate. A bag that's fine on one airline can be too big for another.
3. Buy any extra baggage allowance online in advance
